MECHANICAL MEASURING POUR SPOUTS

Mechanical measuring pour spouts are calibrated to pour a set amount of liquid once a bottle is turned upside down. They usually have a ball bearing in the spout which, by gravity, stops the flow of liquid after the chamber empties the predetermined amount of that chamber.

Some work adequately. All of them need regular cleaning and can become inaccurate due to poor maintenance or just normal wear and tear. Any liquor with sugar content will gum them up quickly.

When a bartender uses one of these pour spouts and he or she thinks the amount poured is short, they right the bottle and then turn it upside down again. This not only defeats the purpose of the device but also causes gross over pouring. It happens a lot. Go to a bar with these devices and observe.

The cost of providing these pourers can be relatively expensive for the job they do. You must choose one size portion to use with them. Bartenders hate these spouts and if you have an unhappy bartender, the desire to control costs goes down.

All control devices have their places, but this one seem to be among the least desirable. I would consider using these spouts only if:

  • You pour only basic highball with limited numbers of liquors

  • The intelligence or skill levels of the bar staff is low

  • Customer perception is a low priority

  • You can somehow prevent bartenders from double tipping bottles for one drink

For Multiple shot sizes that many drink recipes call for, these pour spouts are of limited use.
